Staffing Employment Reaches New High
U.S. staffing firms employed an average of 2.9 million temporary and contract workers per day from April through June - up 3.3 percent or more than 92,000 workers, compared with the same period last year, according to data released by the American Staffing Association (ASA). It was the seventh consecutive quarter in which the staffing industry employed more people than in the same period of any previous year.
While we are seeing slower employment growth in recent months, staffing companies continue to report increased demand from customers looking for workforce flexibility and access to talent, says ASA President and CEO Richard Wahlquist. Customer interest in perm placement remains particularly strong. It's a good time for job seekers.
U.S. temporary and contract staffing services totaled $18 billion in the second quarter, according to the survey, an increase of 5.2 percent over the same period last year.

Temping through a candidate's eyes
Nine out of ten temporary employees indicated they would refer a friend or relative to work on a temporary or contract basis, according to a survey conducted by the Alexandria VA-based American Staffing Association. Additionally, about 90% expressed overall satisfaction with their work experiences. That was a much higher percentage than found in surveys of the total U.S. workforce.
Most survey respondents indicated that they were doing temporary work as a stepping stone to get a full-time job. Regardless of whether they were seeking a permanent job, 88% of survey respondents said they felt their temporary or contract work made them more employable, because they were developing new or improved skills, either through on the job experience or training that the staffing company provided. Nearly one-quarter of those who landed a permanent position said that working as a temporary or contract employee helped them get the job faster.
